Mathilde's grandmother, Princess Sophia (Zofia) Sapieha (1919-1997) was born in Poland.
She married count Leo Komorowki in Warsaw, Poland in 1942. When the communist regime was installed in Poland the family lost their possessions and were no longer safe. They fled to Congo in 1957. When riots broke out in the early 1960s family members were killed and they again had to leave - this time for Belgium where Sophia's daughter Anna married Patrick d'Udekem d'Acoz. Their first child was Mathilde, now queen of Belgium.
