Incoming State Visit #3: Germany

8 March 2016 - 10 March 2016

German President Joachim Gauck and his partner, Mrs Daniela Schadt made an official state visit to Belgium. They stayed for two nights at the royal palace in Brussels.


Tuesday 8 March 2016

At 11:50 the German president and Mrs Schadt arrived for the official start of this visit. Due to bad weather conditions their plane was delayed. King Philippe & Queen Mathilde spent a bit more than an hour waiting for them at the Place Royale in Brussels.











At 12:30 the royal and presidential couple had lunch together at the royal palace.

They also attended a reception at the Brussels town hall.



When greeting Japanese tourists at the Grand Place, Queen Mathilde told them she would be in Japan for a state visit herself at the end of 2016.


In the afternoon Queen Mathilde accompanied Mrs Schadt to Child Focus.




Laurence de Ghellinck accompanied Mathilde for the duration of the state visit.


At 20:00 the King and Queen hosted a banquet in honour of their German guests at the castle of Laeken. Also present: Princess Astrid & Archduke Lorenz and Prince Laurent.












There were 160 guests at the banquet.









Coffee followed at the reception afterwards.







Wednesday 9 March 2016

In the morning the presidential and royal delegation visited the Audi factory in Forest.





Around noon they arrived in Antwerp where they were officially welcomed at the town hall.



Afterwards the ladies visited Fashion Museum MoMu.








Then it went on to the Rubens House Museum.





In the afternoon they went to Mechelen, for a visit to youth centre ROJM.



Finally, the German President hosted a reception for the Belgian King and Queen at Bozar in Brussels.



Thursday 10 March 2016

In the morning the King and Queen accompanied Mr Gauck & Mrs Schadt to Liège. They were officially welcomed at the town hall.



The company then went on to broadcasting equipment company "EVS".




Queen Mathilde and Mrs Schadt visited the Sauvenière immersion school, where children are taught in both French and German.

At 16:00 both couples arrived in Eupen where they attended a work meeting on economic activities in the Maas-Rhein region.






After this last activity the Belgian King and Queen said goodbye to the German President and Mrs Schadt.
